The Marshalltown 11" Philadelphia pattern brick trowel with wood handle is a classic bricklaying tool built for laying block and brick, spreading mortar, and cutting work. Because the Philadelphia pattern has a pointed toe and a wide heel, it picks up mortar cleanly from the board and places it accurately on the course. As a result, it remains one of the most widely used brick trowel patterns in Ireland and the UK.
The Philadelphia pattern has a more pointed toe than the London pattern. Because of this, it is better suited to cutting and pointing work where the toe needs to get into tight joints. The London pattern has a broader, more rectangular blade. In particular, it suits plasterers and bricklayers who prefer more blade surface when spreading mortar on larger block work.
The wood handle gives direct blade feedback with no dampening from a moulded grip. For this reason, many experienced bricklayers prefer it. However, if you want a more ergonomic grip for all-day comfort, the same trowel is also available with a DuraSoft handle as the M1911FG.
