The MXS165D is Marshalltown's 16" x 5" finishing trowel in carbon steel with a DuraSoft handle. Because carbon steel is flexible and responsive, it gives excellent blade feel during skimming and finishing passes. As a result, it remains a popular choice with experienced plasterers who want direct feedback through the blade on large wall areas.

Who It Is For

The 16" x 5" blade suits experienced plasterers who cover large flat walls at speed. In particular, the wide 5" blade gives more surface contact per pass than a narrower trowel. However, the larger size requires confident blade control. For this reason, many plasterers use a 16" trowel for opening up and a smaller trowel for edges and ceiling cuts.

Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel

Carbon steel gives more blade flex than stainless steel. Because of this, many plasterers prefer it for the finishing pass where a responsive blade helps feather out the surface. However, carbon steel needs more care between jobs. In particular, clean and dry the blade after use to prevent rust. For a low-maintenance alternative, the MXS165D is also available in stainless steel.
